Venezuela is a federal presidential republic located in the northern part of South America, subdivided into 23 states and one federal district. It is bordered to the east by Guyana, to the west by Colombia, to the south by Brazil and to the north by the Caribbean Sea.
It covers a total area of 916,445 km², with three principal and distinct geographical areas: the northern mountain range, the Andean Cordillera; the vast, grassy plains of the llanos in the centre; and the southern Guiana Highlands, south of the Orinoco River.
