The Republic of the Congo (also known as Congo Brazzaville or the French Congo) is a presidential republic in Central Africa. To the south west, it sits on the Atlantic Ocean; it is bordered to the north by Cameroon and the Central African Republic, to the east and south by the Democratic Republic of the Congo and to the west by Gabon. It gained independence from France in 1960; it is subdivided administratively into 12 regions, 86 districts and 7 communes.
