Paraguay, officially the Republic of Paraguay, is a presidential republic located in the middle of South America. It is bordered to the north and north west by Bolivia, to the east by Brazil and to the south, south east and west by Argentina.
Paraguay is a landlocked country and it covers a total area of 406.752 km². It can be divided into two main regions, separated by the River Paraguay: Eastern Paraguay, with grassy plains and hills never over 500 m; and Western Paraguay, or Gran Chaco, with low-lying marshes, rich with vegetation, below 200 m. The population numbers 6,561,748, of whom the large majority lives along the eastern coast, although there are some big urban centres, such as the capital Asunción, located along the banks of the river arteries Paraguay and Paranà.

The official languages are Spanish and Guarani, and the local currency is the Guaraní. The economy is heavily based on agriculture (soy, wheat, sunflowers, sugar cane and corn) and livestock farming.
