New Caledonia is a French overseas territory located in the South Pacific Ocean, between New Guinea and New Zealand, around 1,500 km from Australia; it is divided into 3 provinces and 33 communes.
The long mainland island is divided in its 400 km length by a mountain range. The country covers a total of 18,576 km², including its smaller islands, and has a total population of 256,000, according to 2012 estimates, of which the majority are of Melanesian and European descent.
