Montenegro is a parliamentary republic and currently an EU candidate country, located on the Balkan Peninsula in Southern Europe. It is bordered by Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo and Albania, with coastline to the west on the Adriatic Sea. It is subdivided into 21 administrative municipalities; it gained independence in June 2006, when it officially separated from Serbia, with which it had formed the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro.
Montenegro covers a total area of 13,812 km² of mostly mountainous territory. To the west of the River Zeta, there are numerous Karst limestone formations, with stark, rugged peaks; mountain ranges stretch to the north, with peaks reaching over 2,000 m, such as Durmitor, Bjelasica and Komovi, rich with vegetation and pastures; the only flat land is found in the middle of the country, around Lake Scutari and the fertile Zeta valley; this is also the location of the capital city of Podgorica.
The population is mostly made up of Montenegrins and Serbs, and numbers 631,490, according to 2012 estimates.
The official language is Montenegrin, although languages from neighbouring countries are widely spoken, and the local currency is the Euro.
The main economic activities are bauxite mining, financial services and a fast-growing tourist industry.
