Macedonia, officially the Republic of Macedonia, is a parliamentary republic in the Balkan Peninsula of Eastern Europe. It is a landlocked country, bordered by Serbia to the north, Albania to the west, Bulgaria to the east and Greece to the south. It gained independence in 1991, when it separated from the former Yugoslavia; it is subdivided into 85 municipalities.
