Iran is an Islamic parliamentary republic located in Western Asia. It is bordered to the north by Armenia, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan, to the west by Turkey and Iraq and to the east by Afghanistan and Pakistan. To the south lie the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, separated by the Strait of Hormuz. It is divided into 31 administrative regions, and is historically known as Persia, though the name Iran has been used since the ‘fall’ of the Shah in 1979.
Iran has a vast territory, covering 1,648,195 km², with a predominantly mountainous landscape of highlands and ranges, interspersed by plains and water basins. The largest mountain ranges are found in the north and west (Caucasus and Zagros Mountains), though the highest peaks are found in the region immediately south of the Caspian Sea, in the Alborz Mountains. The only lowland regions are found in coastal areas and in Khuzestan Province, which is delimited by the Zagros Mountains.
The population is estimated to number 77,176,930, many of whom are refugees escaped from surrounding countries. The Iranian capital is Tehran, situated in the north of the country. The official language is Persian, though Arabic, Turkish and a number of dialects are widely spoken.
Agriculture (pistachio, barley, cotton, cereals) and livestock farming (cattle, sheep, goats) are widely practised, however, the country’s main economic resource is petroleum, of which Iran is the world’s largest exporter. The country also holds reserves of natural gas, iron, copper and coal. The production of consumer goods is also a growing industry in Iran. The local currency is the Rial.
