Greece is a parliamentary republic located in Southern Europe, at the southern end of the Balkan Peninsula; it includes the Ionian Islands, the Aegean Islands and Crete. It is bordered to the north by the Republic of Macedonia and Bulgaria, to the north west by Albania and to the east by Turkey. The Ionian Sea lies to the west, and the Aegean Sea to the east. It is a member of the EU, NATO and OECD and is subdivided into 13 administrative, governor-led regions. Ancient Greece is generally considered to be the cradle of western civilization, due to the historical and cultural influence it has held over the course of history. The capital is the city of Athens, a European centre of great commercial, industrial and cultural importance.
The Greek landscape, with the Peloponnese peninsula region and numerous islands, stretches for 131,940 km²; it has around 13,000 km of rugged coastline, full of creeks and inlets. The landscape is mountainous in the continental areas (the Pindus Mountains, ‘spine of Greece’, reach 2,637 m and Mount Olympus rises as far as 3000 m), as well as in the Peloponnese regions and on the islands. In the regions of Thessaly and Central Macedonia, however, there are vast, fertile lowland plains.
The population numbers 11,295,002 (2010), and is made up almost exclusively of Greeks, with Albanian, Bulgarian and Georgian minorities; the national language is Greek and the local currency is the Euro.
The Greek economy, very hard hit by the financial crisis of 2008, is based mainly on agriculture, manufacturing (particularly electromechanical, chemical and petrochemical) and tourism.
