Estonia is a parliamentary republic located in Northern Europe, a member of both the EU and NATO. It is bordered by Russia to the east, Latvia to the south and has western and northern coastlines on the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Finland. Various islands, including Saaremaa and Hiiumaa, also belong to Estonia. It gained independence in 1991 with the dissolution of the Soviet Union, and is divided into 15 administrative counties. The capital is Tallinn, an important hub of industry and commerce.
Estonia covers a total area of 45,228 km²; Russian lowland plains to the north, with higher ground of up to 300 m in the south, rich with woodland and small glacial lakes. The population of 1,341,140 (2012) consists mainly of Estonians, with some Russian, Ukrainian and Belarusian minorities; the official language is Estonian (similar to Finnish) and the currency is the Euro.
The country’s main economic activities are those of the tertiary sector (services and tourism), though manufacturing also has an important role (chemical, petrochemical, wood and paper).
