The Cook Islands are an island country located in the South Pacific Ocean, a self-governing parliamentary democracy in free association with New Zealand, who is responsible for its defence and foreign affairs.
It consists of 15 small islands that cover a total of 240 km², with a population of 19,569, according to the 2006 census. The capital, Avarua, lies in the northern part of the island of Rarotonga.
