Bosnia and Herzegovina is a federal parliamentary republic located in Eastern Europe at the heart of the Balkan Peninsula. It is bordered to the north by Croatia, to the south by Serbia and Montenegro, with a short stretch of coastline on the Adriatic Sea. It is divided into 10 cantons (Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina) and 7 regions (Serbian Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina). The country gained independence in 1992, with the dissolution of Yugoslavia. The capital city is Sarajevo.
It covers a total area of 51,209 km² of hills and mountains (the Dinaric Alps, in the west, reach as high as 2000 m); the brief stretch of Adriatic coastline, around the town of Neum, is only about 25 km long. The population numbers 3,760,149 2012, according to 2012 estimates, and is made up of a relative Bosniak (Muslim) majority, with Serb (Orthodox) and Croat (Catholic) minorities. The official languages are Bosnian, Serbian and Croatian, and the currency is the Convertible Mark (which benefits from a fixed exchange rate with the Euro).
The local economy, seriously damaged by the conflicts in the 1990s, is based predominantly on livestock rearing (poultry, sheep and cattle) and mining (carbon, iron, bauxite). The most profitable manufacturing industries are those in cement, steel and aluminium.
