Angola, officially the Republic of Angola, is a presidential republic located in Central Africa. To the west, Angola meets the Atlantic Ocean; it is bordered to the north by the Democratic Republic of the Congo, to the east by Zambia and to the south by Namibia. It is subdivided administratively into 18 provinces and 173 municipalities.
It covers a total surface area of 1,246,700 km²; the population of 19,081,912 is divided into various ethnic groups. The landscape consists mostly of large stretches of upland, with peaks never going beyond 1000 m. To the west, however, is a mountain range whose highest peak, Morro de Moco, reaches 2,620 m. Vast areas of Angola are covered by savannah. The capital is Luanda and the local currency is the Angolan Kwanza. Angola’s economy depends on the trade of coffee and fish. Agreements made with China, allowing the exploitation of Angolan energy resources, have led to recent, sudden economic growth in the country, as well as to a significant reduction in poverty rates (from 63% in 2001, to 38% in 2009). The official language is Portuguese.
