United Kingdom is an island constitutional monarchy, located off the west coast of Northern Europe. It consists of 4 countries: England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
It is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the north west, the North Sea to the east, the English Channel to the south and the Irish Sea to the west.
It is a member of both the EU and NATO and is one of the founding members of the UN.
The island group, including its overseas territories, covers at total area of 244,820 km²; the English landscape consists mainly of hills and plains from east to west, with higher ground running from north to south, such as the Cambrian Mountains and the Pennines; Wales and Scotland are predominantly mountainous, in particular the Welsh peaks of Snowdonia and the northern Scottish Highlands, with numerous freshwater lakes; Northern Ireland, however, has a hilly landscape.
The population greatly exceeds the 63,000,000 of the 2011 census, due, in part, to the constant influx of migrants, making the United Kingdom one of the most populated countries in Europe. The capital, London, is a megalopolis of great importance in terms of world commerce and European culture; it is situated in the south, on the banks of the River Thames.
The official language is English, although Irish, Scots, Ulster Scots, Welsh and Scottish Gaelic are all recognised languages. The local currency is the Pound Sterling.
The strength of the aggregation of four nations places the British economy amongst the six strongest in the world. The automotive industry is of significant importance to the British economy, sustained by means of hydrocarbon reserves and abundant raw materials. Tourism and financial services are also crucial to the local economy.
