Tanzania, officially the United Republic of Tanzania, is a presidential republic in East Africa. It is bordered by Kenya and Uganda to the north, by Rwanda, the Congo and Burundi to the west, and by Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique to the south; it lies on the Indian Ocean to the east. It is divided administratively into 26 regions and 127 districts.
It covers a total area of 945,090 km² and has a population of 44,841,226, according to 2012 estimates. Tanzania‘s territory is predominantly mountainous in the north and west (including Kilimanjaro), whereas central regions are occupied by a vast plateau and fertile plains. The hinterland is home to some of the largest and most important wildlife parks and reserves. The capital is Dodoma and the local currency is the Tanzanian Shilling.
Tanzania is one of the world’s poorest countries, with an economy based largely on agriculture. Industries are few in number and limited to the processing of agricultural produce.
The official languages of Tanzania are Swahili and English.
