Slovakia is a parliamentary republic located in Central Europe, created, together with the Czech Republic, by the division of Czechoslovakia in 1993. It is bordered to the north by Poland, to the north west by the Czech Republic, to the east by Ukraine, to the south by Hungary and to the south west by Austria. It became a member of the European Union in 2004 and is divided administratively into 8 regions and 79 districts.
It covers a total area of 49,037 km² of predominantly mountainous territory. The Carpathians extend across much of the north of Slovakia, including the high peaks of the Tatra Mountains, which are also an important skiing destination. In southern areas, there are lower-lying mountains interspersed by plains and valleys, such as that of the River Danube, which lies along the border with Hungary.
The population reaches well over 5,000,000, according to 2012 estimates, and is made up of a majority of Slovaks, with Hungarian, Czech, Roma and Polish minorities; most people live in urban centres, such as the capital Bratislava.
The official language is Slovak, though Hungarian is spoken in some areas.
After a slow recovery from 1994 onwards, thanks to foreign investments, the local economy has advanced considerably, especially in manufacturing industries such as electronics, food, chemical, iron and steel, and textiles. The tourist industry also appears to hold some promise.
The local currency is the Euro.
