Poland is a parliamentary republic and member of the EU and NATO; it is located in Central Europe. It is bordered to the west by Germany, to the south by the Czech Republic and Slovakia, to the east by Belarus and Ukraine, to the north east by Lithuania and to the north by the Russian exclave Kaliningrad Oblast. Also to the north, it has around 500 km of coastline on the Baltic Sea. It is subdivided into 16 administrative provinces, known as voivodeships.

The population is Slavic in origin, and is made up mainly of Poles, with officially recognised German, Ukrainian, Lithuanian, Jewish and Belarusian minority groups; the total number in 2012 was 38,544,513.

The official language is Polish and the local currency is the Zloty.

The economy was liberalised after the fall of Communism and has since witnessed regeneration by means of the privatisation of small and medium state companies. The main economic activities are agriculture (world’s biggest rye producer) and mining (lead, copper and zinc, as well as precious stones). Other sectors experiencing growth are electromechanics, carpentry (thanks to abundant forests) and the production of paper and glass.
