Mozambique, officially the Republic of Mozambique, is a country in East Africa. It is bordered by Malawi, Tanzania and Zambia to the north, by the Mozambique Channel to the east, by South Africa to the south and by Zimbabwe and Swaziland to the west. It is divided into 11 administrative provinces, which are then subdivided into districts.
It covers a total area of 801,590 km², with a population of 18,255,098, according to 2011 estimates. The landscape of Mozambique consists of two distinct geographical regions: the northern highlands and plateaus, with an average elevation of 600 m and the highest peak on Mount Namuli, at 2,419 m; in the central south, however, the land is low and flat, with several rivers courses, of which the largest is the Zambezi. The capital is Maputo and the local currency is the Mozambican Metical.
The economy is based mainly on agriculture; the country exports agricultural produce (citrus fruit, coconuts, tea, cotton and tobacco), as well as fish, prawns and timber. The official language is Portuguese.
