The Principality of Monaco is an independent constitutional monarchy in Western Europe. To the south, it lies on the Mediterranean Sea (Côte d’Azur) and the rest of the country is bordered by France. It is the second smallest country in the world, after Vatican City, and is made up of one single commune, which is subdivided into 10 wards, of which 4 are traditional quarters.
The country stretches for 1.97 km² along a narrow coastal corridor, on the slopes of the Alps. The capital, Monaco, site of the Prince’s palace, is located on a rocky promontory that extends into the sea. Only a minority of the population of around 30,000 is of Monégasque origin; most people are foreign citizens, mainly from France and Italy.
The official language is French, though Monégasque and Italian are also used; the local currency is the Euro. The country’s economy is based on financial and banking services, as well as tourism, including revenue from the Monte Carlo Casino.
