Ireland, known as the Republic of Ireland, is an island parliamentary republic in Northern Europe, which occupies almost the whole of the island of Ireland. Its only land border is that with Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom. The Atlantic Ocean lies to the west, and it is separated from Great Britain to the east by the Irish Sea, St George’s Channel and the North Channel. It is a member of the EU and OECD, and is subdivided into 4 administrative provinces and 32 counties.
It covers a total area of 70,273 km² of mainly lowland plains and pastures, in the central regions, which are crossed by several rivers (including the River Shannon) and are interspersed by areas of peat bogs (which provide fuel); there are some low-lying mountains and hills in coastal areas.
The capital, Dublin, is found mid-way along the east coast.
The population of 4,469,900 (2012) is mostly of Celtic origin, with some Anglo-Saxon minorities. The official language is Irish, with English recognised as a second language, and the local currency is the Euro.
As well as having a highly developed financial sector, the country’s main economic resources are agriculture and manufacturing (whose growth has been heavily subsidised by low business tax rates).
