Guinea-Bissau, officially the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, is the smallest African country, located in West Africa. It sits on the Atlantic Ocean and is bordered to the north by Senegal and to the south and east by Guinea. It is divided into 8 regions and one autonomous sector. Until 1973, it was a Portuguese colony, and was called Portuguese Guinea.
It covers a total area of 36,120 km², with a population of 1,515,224 of varying ethnic groups. The landscape is entirely flat, with beaches on the Atlantic coast attracting tourism; the rare areas of higher ground never rise above 200 m. The climate is tropical. The capital is Bissau and the local currency is the CFA Franc.
Guinea-Bissau’s economy is based mainly on cashew nut exports; overall, it is one of the poorest countries in the world. The important mineral deposits remain unexploited due to the lack of necessary infrastructure. The official language is Portuguese.
