Germany is a federal parliamentary republic in Central Europe. It is bordered to the north by Denmark, to the north east by the Netherlands, to the east by Poland and the Czech Republic, to the south by Austria and to the west by France, Switzerland, Belgium and Luxembourg; to the north, it sits on the Baltic Sea and the North Sea. It is a member of the EU, NATO, G8, G7 and G4 and is divided into 16 federal states. The capital is Berlin, a city of great historical, cultural and political importance, as well as having one of the highest populations in Europe.
Germany covers a total area of 357,123.50 km², occupying a large part of Central Europe; from the Algovian Alps and the Bavarian and Salzburg Prealps in the extreme south, to the northern coastlines on the Baltic Sea (uneven and overlooking archipelagos and lagoons) and North Sea (flat and sandy). The northern regions of the country also hold the vast plains of the North German Lowland and the low mountain ranges, or Mittelgebirge (Rhenish Massif, Ore Mountains, Black Forest, Bohemian Forest and Bavarian Forest). There are several important rivers (Danube, Elbe, Rhine, Oder, Weser and Ems) and man-made canals, which are useful for goods transport. With a population of 83,302,465 (2012), Germany is one of the most urbanized and densely populated countries in the world (74% of the population lives in urban areas).
The official language is German and the local currency is the Euro, which succeeded the German Mark in 2002.
The country’s economy, which remained one of the strongest in Europe and the world despite the global crisis of 2009, is heavily dependent on the tertiary sector (business, banking, tourism, services and insurance), which counts for around 70% of the national GDP. Manufacturing also plays an important role, especially vehicle, iron and steel, chemical and electronics.
