Fiji is a republican island nation located in the south western region of the Pacific Ocean; it is made up of 320 islands (of which only around 100 are inhabited) and over 500 islets.
The archipelago covers a total area of 18,274 km² and has a subtropical climate; the larger, mountainous islands, with substantial limestone deposits, are of volcanic origin; however, the land is flat around the coastline. The local economy is based on agriculture (sugar cane), though tourism is experiencing rapid growth.
