Chile, officially the Republic of Chile, is a presidential republic located in the extreme south west of South America; a narrow strip of land rarely exceeding 400 km in width, though running for 4,200 km in length. It is bordered to the north by Peru, to the east by Bolivia and Argentina, and to the south and west by the Pacific Ocean.
It covers a total area, including its islands in the Pacific, of 755,838 km², with a landscape made up of three geographically different regions: the cordilleras, which run down the eastern side of the country, with volcanic peaks reaching up to 6,000 m in central areas; the Central Valley, a longitudinal lowland 900 km long, at the feet of the Andes Mountains; and the coastal region, compact to the north in central areas but consisting of a labyrinth of fjords and islets, with canals and twisting peninsulas, that runs right down to the Tierra del Fuego archipelago. The country’s capital is Santiago, situated in the central region. The population is almost entirely of European descent, and numbers 17,113,688, according to 2010 estimates.
The official language is Spanish and the local currency is the Peso. The solid Chilean economy is based on: agriculture and livestock farming in central and southern areas; but, above all, copper mining (Chile is the world’s biggest exporter), and also gold, molybdenum and platinum extraction.
