Chad, officially the Republic of Chad, is a landlocked presidential republic in Central Africa. It is bordered to the north by Libya, to the east by Sudan, to the south west by Cameroon and Nigeria, to the west by Niger and to the south by the Central African Republic. It is divided into 22 administrative regions.
It covers a total area of 1,284,000 km² and has a population of 11,175,915. The landscape of Chad can be divided into four climatic regions: the vast, arid central plains; the deserts to the north, with the volcanic Tibesti Mountains, of which the highest peak, the Emi Koussi, rises to 3,415 m; the arid mountains in the north west; and the tropical lowlands in the south. The capital of Chad is N’Djamena and the local currency is the CFA Franc. The official languages are French and Arabic. In economic terms, the country is classed amongst the poorest, though it is experiencing slow growth through the exploitation of its oil wells.
Agriculture is practised almost entirely on a subsistence level, a means of survival for the population; only cotton, livestock and gum arabic are used for trading.
