Brazil is a federal republic located in South America. It is bordered to the north by French Guiana, Guyana, Suriname and Venezuela, to the west by Peru and Bolivia, to the north west by Colombia, to the south east by Paraguay and Argentina and to the south by Uruguay. The Atlantic Ocean lies to the east.
Brazil covers a total area of 8,514,877 km², making it the fifth largest country in the world, and has a population of 193,946.886. The landscape is dominated by the Brazilian uplands, the Amazonian Basin and the Guiana Highlands. The largest and longest river is the Amazon, running for 6,280 km, 4,000 of which can be sailed even by large ships. Brazil’s climate is extremely variable: tropical weather to the north, with consistently high temperatures and abundant rainfall; milder weather along the coastal areas; and an equatorial, humid climate in the Amazon rainforest, making it one of the wettest places on earth. The capital of Brazil is Brasilia, and its currency is the Real.
For a long time, Brazil’s economy was based on the exploitation of natural resources: precious woods, gold and diamond deposits, and coffee and rubber plantations. In recent decades, however, there has been steady growth in the consumer goods industries: textiles; electrical engineering; production of electrical appliances; agriculture and food – especially sugar (of which Brazil is the biggest exporter in the world) and tobacco and fruit juice (of which it is the third biggest exporter). The official language is Portuguese.
