Belgium is a federal parliamentary monarchy located in Western Europe and member of the European Union. It is bordered to the north and east by the Netherlands, also to the east by Germany and Luxembourg and to the south and west by France; to the south east, Belgium sits on North Sea. In 1993, a revision of Belgium‘s constitution established a unique federal state, in which are recognized the three autonomous regions – Flemish, Walloon and Brussels-Capital – and the three language communities – French-speaking, Flemish-speaking and German-speaking. The capital, Brussels, is the headquarters of the European Commission and the Council of the European Union, two of the largest EU institutions.
Belgium covers a total area of 30,536 km², with alluvial plains to the north, including the coastal plain of sandy polders, and a more undulated hinterland with rich valleys and low-lying hills of up to 100 m. To the south of the rivers Sambre and Meuse, there is an area of vast, lush uplands. The population of 10,712,066 (2012) historically is made up of distinct language communities: Flemish (a Dutch dialect), French and a small German minority. The local currency is the Euro.
Belgium‘s strong and dynamic economy is based predominantly on services (financial, commercial, insurance and banking), though it is also successful in other sectors, such as agriculture (barley, sugar beet, apples, pears, linseed), livestock rearing (cattle, pigs, horses and related products) fishing (shellfish and oysters in the Ostend area) and manufacturing (agricultural and food, chemical, metallurgic).
