Belarus is a presidential republic located in Eastern Europe. It is landlocked country, bordered to the north west by Lithuania and Latvia, to the north east and east by Russia and to the south by the Ukraine. It gained independence in 1991, the year of the dissolution of the Soviet Union, and it is subdivided into 6 administrative regions; the capital, Minsk, has its own special administrative district.
Belarus covers a total area of 207,600 km², a mostly flat landscape, though there are the Belarus highlands stretching across southern areas from south west to north east. The highest peaks, over 300 m, are found around the capital city of Minsk, in the central region. Although the country is landlocked, it is rich with freshwater lakes (around 11,000).
The total population of 9,595,421 (2012) is made up of a Belarusian majority, with notable Russian, Polish and Ukrainian minorities; the official languages are Belarusian and Russian and the local currency is the Belarusian Ruble.
The local economy is based on agriculture (textile products), growing manufacturing industries (chemical, mechanical and textile) and mining.
